AI Increased Engineering Velocity. It Didn't Fix Developer Onboarding.

Every week I see another announcement.

"AI increased our engineering throughput."

"We now ship features 6x faster."

"Developers can generate code in seconds."

Those improvements are real.

But there's a question almost nobody asks.

How many developers actually reach production successfully?

Because shipping code faster and helping developers succeed are two completely different problems.

The Metric Everyone Celebrates

Engineering leaders love velocity.

Now AI has accelerated every one of those metrics.

Teams are producing more software than ever before.

Yet many companies never measure what happens after a developer reads the documentation.

Did they finish onboarding?

Did they integrate successfully?

Did they deploy to production?

Or did they quietly disappear?

The Silent Failures Nobody Sees

If documentation contains a broken link, you'll notice.

A 404 is obvious.

A missing page gets reported quickly.

But onboarding assumptions are different.

They don't crash immediately.

They create false confidence.

A developer believes they're following the correct path because every step appears to work.

Days or weeks later, production behaves differently.

The support ticket arrives.

The engineering team starts debugging.

Product teams investigate.

Everyone assumes the bug is in the code.

Sometimes it isn't.

Sometimes the problem started in the documentation.

The Cost of Hidden Assumptions

A single undocumented assumption can create:

The expensive part isn't fixing the documentation.

The expensive part is finding out that documentation caused the problem in the first place.

AI Didn't Create This Problem

AI simply made it easier to ship software faster.

But faster software doesn't automatically create better onboarding.

If anything, the gap becomes larger.

Documentation changes more frequently.

Products evolve faster.

New features appear every week.

If onboarding isn't reviewed with the same urgency as the product itself, hidden assumptions accumulate.

What Should Teams Measure Instead?

Instead of asking:

"How much faster are we shipping?"

Ask:

Those metrics tell you whether your platform is actually usable.

The Real Competitive Advantage

The companies that win won't simply write code faster.

They'll remove the invisible friction between "Hello World" and production.

Because developers don't choose platforms based only on features.

They choose platforms they can trust.

And trust isn't built by AI-generated code.

It's built by onboarding that doesn't leave developers guessing.
